10 Best Car Camping & Van Life Spots in Tennessee

The Ultimate Guide to Free (and Beautiful) Places to Sleep in the Volunteer State

Tennessee is a gem for vanlifers and car campers. From misty mountain mornings to riverside sunsets, this state has something for everyone—whether you’re craving remote forest solitude or looking to boondock just outside a vibrant music town. I’ve spent plenty of nights parked under the Tennessee stars, and these are my favorite places to sleep, explore, and soak in the magic of the Southeast.

Here are my top 10 car camping and van life spots in Tennessee, based on beauty, accessibility, safety, and how easy it is to spend the night without drawing unwanted attention.

1. Cherokee National Forest (Dispersed Camping Areas)

Region: East Tennessee
Type: Free dispersed camping

This is vanlife paradise in Tennessee. There are tons of forest roads and pull-offs where you can camp for free legally for up to 14 days. Look near the Citico Creek area, Bald River Falls, or around Watauga Lake. Quiet, wild, and peaceful—plus plenty of hiking and swimming holes.

🛑 Be sure to camp at least 100 feet from water and leave no trace!

2. Cades Cove (Great Smoky Mountains National Park)

Region: East Tennessee
Type: Developed campground

Cades Cove is a little slice of Appalachian heaven. Surrounded by mountains and wildlife, it offers some of the best scenery in the Smokies. You’ll need a reservation at the campground, but it’s worth the small fee. Sunrise here is something you’ll never forget.

🚐 No stealth camping inside the national park—campground only.

3. Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area

Region: North-Central TN
Type: Developed and dispersed options nearby

This underrated national area near the Kentucky border is full of rivers, gorges, and free campsites in nearby Daniel Boone National Forest. You’ll find paid campgrounds, horse trails, and lesser-known forest roads perfect for peaceful van stays.

🧭 Check out Station Camp and Bandy Creek areas for great access to trails and water.

4. Natchez Trace Parkway Pull-Offs

Region: Western Middle TN
Type: Scenic road pull-offs

This historic and scenic drive has multiple designated pull-offs where car campers and vanlifers can legally stay overnight. It’s quiet, full of nature, and you might even spot deer or wild turkeys right outside your van in the morning.

🚦 Stick to marked spots and follow posted signs to avoid fines.

5. South Cumberland State Park (Savage Gulf Area)

Region: Southeast TN
Type: Primitive campground and trailhead parking

This is one of my favorite places to park before or after a big hike. There are a few backcountry trailheads where overnight parking is allowed, and a small paid campground if you want amenities. Savage Gulf is stunning—waterfalls, overlooks, and epic views.

🥾 Perfect base camp for exploring Fiery Gizzard and Stone Door trails.

6. Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area

Region: Northwest TN
Type: Dispersed and designated camping areas

Sprawling across Tennessee and Kentucky, this area has a TON of space to spread out. You can camp right by the water at places like Sugar Bay or pick a back road and find a quiet nook. There’s even a van-friendly Elk & Bison Prairie to drive through!

💸 You’ll need a cheap dispersed camping permit (~$15 for 3 days or ~$30 for a year).

7. Frozen Head State Park

Region: Eastern TN
Type: Developed campground and trailhead parking

One of Tennessee’s most underrated mountain parks, Frozen Head is peaceful and less crowded than the Smokies. The campground is budget-friendly, and trailhead lots are sometimes okay for overnight car camping with ranger approval.

🌲 Great for solitude, waterfalls, and starry skies.

8. Buffalo River Area (Wayne County BLM-style land)

Region: Middle TN
Type: Stealth/dispersed options near river access

Though not officially BLM, this area has a few unofficial dispersed camping spots along the Buffalo River. Popular with kayakers and fishermen, it’s a chill place to stealth camp on a riverbank and fall asleep to the sound of frogs and running water.

🌊 Be cautious during rainy season—low-lying areas can flood fast.

9. Roan Mountain Area

Region: Northeast TN
Type: Dispersed nearby + campground

This spot straddles the TN/NC line and offers spectacular mountain views, rhododendron blooms in summer, and cool temps even in July. The Roan Mountain State Park campground is great, but dispersed forest camping can be found nearby along forest roads.

🏞️ Check out Carver’s Gap and the Appalachian Trail access points.

10. City Overnight Options (Knoxville & Chattanooga)

Region: Urban TN
Type: Stealth/parking lots

While cities aren't ideal for long-term camping, both Knoxville and Chattanooga are van-friendly for a night or two if you’re stealthy. Think 24-hour gyms, truck stops, or Cracker Barrel lots. Chattanooga even has a few vanlife-friendly parking lots near downtown for a small fee.

🏙️ Great for restocking, coffee shop workdays, or meeting other travelers.

🧭 Final Tips for Vanlife in Tennessee

  • Download offline maps—service in the mountains is hit or miss.

  • Rest stops are plentiful along I-40 and I-75 and make great emergency overnighters.

  • Be respectful—Tennessee locals are generally welcoming if you don’t leave a mess.

  • Wildlife is real—raccoons, bears, and snakes are all part of the package. Secure your food!

Tennessee offers a little bit of everything for vanlifers—from deep wilderness and waterfall hikes to southern cities with charm and comfort. Whether you’re in a converted Sprinter or a humble hatchback, you’ll find a spot here to call home… even if it’s just for the night.

Know a hidden gem I missed? Let me know—I’m always looking for new places to roll into!
